Guro's Summer Must-Dos in Birmingham, Alabama

Summer in Birmingham is a time to cool down by indulging in delicious treats and exploring the natural beauty of the area. Here’s a guide to some of my favorite spots to make the most of the season.

Cool Down with Ice Cream OR A beverage

When the Alabama heat kicks in, there's nothing better than treating yourself to some ice cream. Two of my favorite spots are:

  • Jeni's at Pepper Place: Known for their unique and delectable flavors, Jeni's never disappoints. Whether you're in the mood for a classic flavor or something more adventurous, they have it all.

  • Big Spoon Creamery in Avondale: This place is a gem! Their handcrafted ice creams are a treat, and their seasonal flavors keep me coming back for more.

Refresh with a Cold Brew or Frappe

A cold brew or frappe is a perfect pick-me-up on a hot summer day. Here are my go-to places:

  • Domestique at Saturn: Their cold brew is top-notch, providing that perfect caffeine kick to get through the day.

  • Red Cat at Pepper Place: I love their frappe, especially after a morning walk on the Rotary Trail.

Enjoy a Cocktail or Glass of Wine

When the temperature dips below 90°F, it's time to unwind with a drink. Here are my favorite spots:

  • Mayawell: Their rooftop terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a margarita with a view of the Birmingham sunset.

  • Bettola at Pepper Place: Sipping on a glass of cold white wine under the pergola at Bettola is one of my favorite self-treats. You will usually see me here for lunch.

  • Pilcrow Cocktail Bar on Morris Avenue: This dark, cool bar is an ideal retreat from the summer heat. Their cocktail selection is fantastic and the atmosphere is perfect for a night out.

Take a Dip in a Swim Hole

Who needs the beach or the lake? Summer isn't complete without a trip to one of the many beautiful swim holes around Birmingham. Here are my top picks:

  • Mardis Mills Falls: A bit of a drive, but absolutely worth it for its stunning beauty and refreshing waters.

  • High Falls: Another excellent spot for a day trip, offering great views and a perfect place to cool off.

  • Turkey Creek: If you're looking for something closer to Birmingham, Turkey Creek is the coldest and cleanest creek in the area according to my sources. It's perfect for a refreshing swim.

  • Canoe Slip on HWY 78 in Irondale/Leeds: For a quick afternoon dip just down the road from our house in Crestline, this is the perfect place.

Have a fun and safe summer in the ‘ham!
