Downsizing Simplified: Four Steps to Downsize

Ever heard the saying “less is more”? The same is true when it comes to your home. Whether you’re an empty nester or just trying to simplify your life, downsizing can be a great way to save money and cut the clutter. Whether you’re reaching retirement or a millennial looking for a more sustainable way to live, downsizing your home could be the right move.

So whether you’re downsizing to save money or make life easier, I’ve compiled a list of four easy steps to get you started.

1. Start ASAP!

Downsizing is no small feat, so giving yourself plenty of time to navigate the process is essential. According to Rocket Mortgage, a good rule of thumb is that you’ll want to start at least three months before you plan to move. Make sure to begin the downsizing as soon as possible so you can sort through everything without feeling overwhelmed.

2. Declutter

The first step of the downsizing process and getting your home ready to sell is decluttering. Decluttering can be overwhelming, so make sure you have a game plan. Try planning what rooms you’ll begin with and setting time-bound goals. Remember - the goal is to find balance and sort through the clutter to find (and keep) the things you really need.

3. Pace Yourself

Remember when I mentioned starting ASAP? There’s a reason for that. Even though downsizing may be the logical choice for you, it doesn’t mean it isn’t emotional. Not only do you want to give yourself as much time as possible to downsize, but you should also pace yourself during this overwhelming process.

4. Work with a REALTOR®

Choosing an agent you trust makes a difference when selling your home - especially when downsizing. When searching for a REALTOR®, choose someone who works with you in mind. Someone who will advocate for you and keep you in the loop every step of the way.

For example, when I’m working with sellers, I analyze their local market to determine price, offer feedback for preparing their homes for sale and keep them updated every step of the way. Remember - selling your home is a big step, so you want someone who will work hard for you!

PS. Did I mention that I’m a pretty good organizer??
