Best of Birmingham: Avondale

Avondale (Forest Park-South Avondale) is a part of the Red Mountain community, with its center on 41st St S between 1st Ave S and Avondale Park. It’s a trendy mix of restaurants, bars, music venues, and breweries. And with its proximity to Downtown Birmingham and UAB, Avondale is a community perfect for both families and young professionals and students!

THINGS TO DO

Take a walk around the historic neighborhood and enjoy the murals, park, and older craftsman-style homes. Avondale Park has a pavilion at the top of the park and a perfect playground for the kids! There are two breweries, Avondale Brewing and Cahaba Brewing Company, that host a variety of events. And make sure to stop by Saturn Birmingham! It’s a space-themed bar with vintage games, great cocktails, and concerts.

SHOPPING, BARS, AND RESTAURANTS

Seasick Records is a new addition to the neighborhood but a welcome one! There, you’ll find vinyl for mainstream acts and curated collections for sub-genres, an extensively used department, and local bands. They even host in-store shows - when we’re not in a pandemic.

Next to Seasick, you’ll find ORE Mercantile - a micro-retailer featuring a deli and a variety of local businesses such as Faith Skate Supply, Smallwood Studios, Alabama Peanut Company, and more. They’ve even added a delicious Italian deli where you can enjoy meats, cheeses, hand-crafted subs, and more. Just a block down 3rd Ave S you’ll find Avondale Antiques, a heaven for the mid-century lover. So if you’re into antiques, that’s the spot for you!

And Avondale dining can’t be beat! One of my favorite restaurants is Tropicaleo, which features a separate vegan menu and often hosts eclectic pop-ups like Pho Real, movie nights, and drag shows. Another restaurant top pick is Avondale Common House. Trust me, their brunch, sandwiches, bowls, and burgers are delicious! If you’re into Mexican food, Taco Morro Loco is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Birmingham. They have a storefront at 41st St S, but they also have a truck on 5th Ave S by the Marathon gas station.

If you’re ready for a night out, give Parkside Cafe a spin. Located on 5th Ave S, they have a cool space with a courtyard out back that sets the scene for a great night out. Try your hand at Shuffleboard at 41st Street Pub & Aircraft Sales or visit Mom’s Basement for a vintage blast from the past. Because it really is decked out like your mom’s basement!
