The Ultimate Decluttering Checklist!

The Ultimate Decluttering Checklist!

Start 2021 off right with my ultimate decluttering checklist!

External clutter is internal clutter on display. Your home is cluttered because your life is. Decluttering is self-care (...)” - Apartment Therapy

One of my favorite websites when it comes to interior design, decorating, and organizing is Apartment Therapy. I am always in some way decluttering, tidying up, reorganizing. I enjoy my home more when it’s tidy. I sleep better when there are no clothes all over the bedroom. And I definitely work better when our guest room/home office and my desk is clean. I’m a sucker for systems so I read all these articles hoping to pick up on some new tips.

Declutter with me!

Are you ready for some self-care? I have put together a list of my 20 favorite decluttering tips.

Every day for the rest of January I will use the list to declutter my own house. Check my Instagram daily and let’s declutter together!

  1. Eyes on the goal! Ask yourself: Why declutter? What areas of your life will benefit?

  2. 1 in, 2 out. This is a general tip for all areas. If you buy something new, two things need to go! When you feel like the area is under control change o 1 in, 1 out.

  3. It’s easy to get overwhelmed. Start with one drawer, one cabinet, or the fridge.

  4. Food that has expired. Hello, flour bought for Christmas cookie baking in 2015!

  5. Unused kitchen items. Yup, juicer used twice, you gotta go!

  6. Clutter drawer. No one needs more than 1.

  7. Collect beauty/skincare products in one place. Use the lotions and shampoo with the least left first and don’t buy anything new until you’re almost out!

  8. Collect all meds and health products in one place. You probably won’t need to buy Advil until 2025!

  9. Clothes. Be honest with yourself. The pair of jeans that haven’t fit since 2010 goes in the donation box!

  10. Throw away mismatched things. Bye bye, single socks and food containers with no lid!

  11. Books. Donate books you will never read (again) to a thrift store, prison, or a “tiny library”.

  12. Important papers. Collect important papers (‘important papers’ does not include bank statements from 2008!), passports, credit cards, etc. in one place.

  13. Computer and email. Your files and folders are a mess. You’re almost out of storage, and you have 2,839 unread emails on your mail app.

  14. Don’t store smaller items on the floor. It doesn’t look good and it makes cleaning harder!

  15. Old magazines and takeaway menus. If you save magazines to go through, go through them and then toss! Almost all restaurants have their menu online.

  16. “Yard shoes” and gym shirts. Shoes and shirts often get degraded to “yard shoes” and gym shirts, but how many do you really need?

  17. Empty boxes and wrapping paper. We just threw out the box for a coffee maker we haven’t had for a year!

  18. If you just have to buy something, buy new workout gear - and work out, items that will help you organize, or something nice to spruce up your home office.

  19. Let go of the belief that an inability to be organized is a flaw or something to be embarrassed about.

  20. In case of emergency: Call 911 - or a professional organizer!

Bonus tip

If you find yourself working from home instead of commuting to work, use that time to get some sleep - or declutter!
